Interesting idea. I like the idea that you communicate with others who share your tastes. I think its uptake would depend on:

1. Number of companies/media companies who take it up on launch giving users something to get involved in from the start (something Google Wave didn't do).

2. How well it integrates with other social networking sites.

eg: Say I'm at the cinema: I update my facebook status, check in on foursquare, maybe update twitter and then check in on this too. I think this would need to be done cross platform.

Would be interested to see this in action though.

Hope that helps.

At a time when business is just getting to grips with Foursquare it both opens up new opportunities and adds confusion in equal measure.

I think GetGlue has the the advantage of being virtual and not having to be in a location to check in. If we can interact with our favourite films/tv programmes then great.

Love to see this technology used in sport where people can interact when watching games/tournaments. Has massive potential but dont think we have seen the platform that will make it explode.

Hi Rebecca,

This is some great advice for people looking to get started in social media monitoring.
I just wanted to point you towards Sysomos as one of your premium options in this space (http://sysomos.com). We have two pieces of software that we're really proud of and our clients love. Heartbeat is a tool for real-time monitoring and engagement and MAP is our in depth research and reporting tool.
If you ever care for some more info I'd be more than happy to get you some.
I just wanted to point it out as another option.

Cheers,

Thanks so much for including Alterian in your post. You've packed a lot of excellent guidelines in here. I like that you encourage people to start from their objectives and decide what to measure ahead of time. I think sometimes people get so caught up in "Look at all this data we can collect!" that they end up becoming overwhelmed if they don't think about and prioritize which metrics are relevant to them and to their brands and clients.

I also wanted to let you know that Alterian does provide a Freemium version of SM2.

Thanks again!
